Tour Description:
Experience a unique and out of the ordinary motorcycle touring vacation. Travel back in time to the undiscovered Mexico, untrammeled and unspoiled. This tour features rides on paved, twisty roads through forests of saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert and through 300 year old towns into the Sierra Madres and two nights on the Sea of Cortez in the resort town of San Carlos. You'll have a free day to walk on the beach, go fishing, snorkeling or just explore. Optional (un-guided) rides on un-paved roads are available for those riders on dual-sport or adventure touring motorcycles. Along the way you'll visit 17th century Spanish missions and churches. If you're a motorcycle traveler looking for something unforgettable and truly different then this tour is for you.

Mexico Motorcycle tours begin and end in Phoenix, Arizona, to accomodate rentals through our rental partner, AZRides.com. Plan to fly into Sky Harbor International Airport the day before the tour starts.

Special requirements for the Mexico Tour:
Be sure your bike is in top working condition. While repairing a flat tire can be accomplished and we will have a toolbox, any major repairs will likely have to wait until your motorcycle is back in the States.

We will visit quiet towns, not used to lots of tourists. We require that you do not run pipes that exceed US noise limits.

Papers Please:
You will need to bring your driver's license, registration for your motorcycle, your Mexican motorcycle insurance and US proof of insurance. You will also purchase a vehicle permit and visa costing about $55 at the border. Call us for details on permits. You are required to present a valid passport to re-enter the US from Mexico. Apply for your passport early as there have been delays in the past. It is your responsibity to have the correct documents. Please check passport and other document requirements at the US State Department website or the Get A Passport Now website.

If you are not a US or Canadian citizen it is critical that you determine what documents will be required to re-enter to the US. Please do this before you cross into Mexico.

Trip Insurance:
We highly recommend you purchase trip insurance.

Safety:
This is a very safe area of small towns full of honest, friendly people who look out for one another and their guests. As a result, crime is low. In addition, we work with local officials and business people to make your tour as safe as possible, but just as at home, you must use common sense. We recommend staying with the group, leaving valuables home and being aware of your surroundings at all times.

Mexican Motorcycle Insurance:
Your US motorcycle insurance does not cover you in Mexico. You must purchase Mexican insurance. Without liability insurance, if you damage any property or another vehicle with your motorcycle and you do not have insurance, you will have to stay in Mexico until the damage is paid for. Rental bikes will require this coverage as well, call us for details We have used Adventure Mexican Insurance to purchase insurance online but you are free to research and choose your own company. If you are riding your own bike, you must decide if you want liability only or full coverage. Costs of the insurance will vary widely based on the coverages you choose and the value of your motorcycle. Check with your insurance agent if you need information on coverages. The insurance should run from day 2 through day 7 of the tour. You will need full coverage (theft and collision) for rental bikes and this will be handles by the rental company

Mexican Gas Stations:
A gasolinera will sell you gasolina. There is only one game in town, PEMEX. Two grades are usually available, Verde (green) and Rojo (red), which is premium. The quality is comparable to what you would buy in the US and costs are slightly higher. Be aware that some stations only carry one grade, usually regular. We carry a small amount of octane booster if you get caught.

Gas is sold in liters. Most stations will take US dollars. The exchange rate varies but figure roughly about 10 pesos = 1 US Dollar. You can exchange dollars for pesos at most larger banks before you leave to start the trip but you may find it easier to exchange money when we get to Mexico. The attendant will handle the pump and a tip (fifty cents to a dollar) is optional but appreciated.

What to Bring:
Our Tips and Checklist page has almost everything you need for your vacation. The weather will be mild but rain and cool nights can be expected so be prepared. Bring an anti-theft device (lock) for your motorcycle. We cable all the motorcycles together each night in Mexico. You might want to bring a Spanish/English dictionary or phrase book.

What not to bring:
Do not bring valuable jewelry or other such items. Do not attempt to bring firearms or ammunition into Mexico. You will be arrested. Even a single empty shell casing in your saddlebags can be trouble. Same for illegal drugs. Mexican jails have a reputation as places you do not wish to spend your vacation.

Other things to note:
Riding at night outside the town limits is discouraged. Many local and farm vehicles do not have proper lighting and pose a hazard. Cattle, horses, deer and other critters are on the roads at night.

We may encounter military checkpoints. They are looking for drugs and weapons. You may be asked to open your saddle bags for a quick inspection. Touristas are generally not hassled in any way and usually do not even have to show IDs.
